Not On This Day!

May 27th, 2010 by San Diego CityFest Team

On May 22 volunteers participated in the county’s largest-ever food distribution day.  An estimated 3000 families received a hot meal and enough food for an entire week.  The event was called “Not On This Day!” meaning that at least some San Diegans would not go hungry on May 22.

Food distribution occurred at “block parties” in Spring Valley, San Diego, and El Cajon.  The events featured live music, bounce houses for kids, as well as the much-needed food.  On the CityFest Season of Service Hunger Board were partners San Diego Food Bank, Feeding America, and The Treasure Box, all of whom provided food to distribute on location.   Spearheading the Season of Service Hunger Board was CityFest Season of Service Director Sam Williams along with Metro CEO John Hughes.

Oceanside Mayor to Officially Recognize Season of Service!

May 25th, 2010 by San Diego CityFest Team

(May24, 2010)Mayor Jim Wood will make a proclamation Wednesday evening declaring 2010 the Season of Service in Oceanside in support of San Diego CityFest with Luis Palau.  The Season of Service is a 5 month volunteer movement motivating the largest body of participants in San Diego’s history.  Mayor Wood will read the proclamation on Wednesday at 6pm at the City Council Meeting, held at 300 North Coast Highway.

Oceanside follows the County Board of Supervisors and Mayor Lewis of El Cajon in drafting written support of the Season of Service, and will be followed by National City Mayor Ron Morrison.

16 pastors from the Oceanside community will stand alongside CityFest Director Chris McFarland and CityFest Church Relations Director Mike Carlisle as the Declaration is read.  Among them will be Shawn Mitchell of New Venture Christian Fellowship, Hal Seed of New Song Church and Mike Reed of Calvary Chapel Oceanside.   Each of these men will express their congregation’s commitment to serving the City of Oceanside and to being positive instruments of change in the community.

Mayor Wood’s proclamation is another big step in gaining community support – and another huge step in bringing together groups that don’t always work together, to truly Love San Diego.

Bayview Charities Participates in Not on This Day!

May 4th, 2010 by San Diego CityFest Team

Luis Palau is working with San Diego to bring about a change in the entire county. City Fest is on the move with its Season of Service in San Diego, so check out what is happening on May 22, 2010. We at Bayview Charities are working with Treasure Box on a major donation for the Season of Service’s Not on This Day. This will address the large numbers of those who go hungry each day in San Diego.

We need your help. How can you help?

We need PRAYER. Please pray for God to lead us in our planning, keeping with His purpose. Pray that those who are in need are able to be fed both physically and spiritually. Pray that the Spirit unifies those who volunteer in service with harmony and love for one another as they serve. Pray that God becomes known by those who do not know Him as a result of this effort.

We need VOLUNTEERS. Go to City Fest and register to Get Involved or visit www.volunteermatch.org and sign up with Bayview Charities. Whether you sign up as a church, small group or an individual, get signed up and show up. Join the effort to do more than we can do on our own. Come together as one body and serve the Lord with gladness.

We need DONATIONS.  Visit HUNGER- NOT ON THIS DAY – SAN DIEGO – May 22, 2010 A Season of Service Event in order to donate a Treasure Box to a needy family in our community.  Your donation will help the nearly half million people who go hungry night after night in San Diego.

Think the Season of Service is a one-time thing? Think Again!

April 29th, 2010 by San Diego CityFest Team

From time to time, we hear  “Oh, the Season of Service is not for us… we don’t get involved in one-time events, we want long-term change.”

The reality is… Long-Term change starts with a one-time action.  And then another one-time action, and then another, and then another and then another.  Long Term change in San Diego looks like the 300+ churches and organizations that have committed to serving performing 300+ one-time actions.   And realizing the impact that 300+ one-time actions can make, and doing that same thing, over and over and over again.  Then, you’ve sparked Long-term change…

Portland just kicked off it’s 3rd annual Season of Service!  One-time has become an annual tradition!  How’s that for long term change in a city!?  Here’s more on what’s going on in Portland:

“This year’s Season of Service launched last Thursday evening. In front of more than 1,000 people, Portland City Commissioner Amanda Fritz read a proclamation signed by Portland Mayor Sam Adams declaring May 1 through October 31 to be the Season of Service 2010.

This marks the third annual Season of Service where churches come together to make a greater impact on their communities by combining resources to address major areas of need throughout the metropolitan area. Many projects are already planned and several will take place in the coming weeks.”

Sleepless San Diego a Huge Success

April 27th, 2010 by admin

The CityFest Season of Service Kick-off at Sleepless was a HUGE SUCCESS!!  500 sleepers came to stay for the night and many more visited the evening expo.  The evening was filled with music from the main stage, a presentation by San Diego CityFest Director Chris McFarland, and even recognition from San Diego City Mayor Jerry Sanders

And as evening turned to night, a mix of glow sticks provided by San Diego CityFest staff and San Diegans sleeping on cots created a heart-warming scene.  San Diego truly does care about its homeless community.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SAN DIEGANS SLEEP UNDER THE STARS IN SUPPORT OF COUNTY’S HOMELESS

Sleepless San Diego in Partnership with San Diego CityFest with Luis Palau

Raises Funds and Awareness for Homeless Community

(April 12, 2010) – On April 24, hundreds of willing volunteers will forgo the comfort of home to spend the night outside at Liberty Station. Families, teens, grandparents, working professionals and even children will sleep on cots and in sleeping bags to raise awareness for San Diego County’s homeless. By fundraising for their night under the stars, San Diegans will also contribute financially to long-term solutions to homelessness through host organization San Diego Rescue Mission.

According to the “2009 Point in Time Count,” by the Regional Task Force on the Homeless, close to 8,000 San Diegans can be found sleeping on the streets, in emergency shelters, or in transitional housing on a given night.  The San Diego Rescue Mission has been serving this community since 1955. Apart from Sleepless San Diego, it provides both short and long-term services to help transition the homeless community.

Currently the 4th annual Sleepless San Diego, the event runs from 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, until 7 a.m. on Sunday, April 25. It includes both a free expo and the fundraising sleep-out.  The afternoon and evening will be packed with live music, testimonies from individuals who have been helped by the Rescue Mission, great food and drink vendors, and educational activities to learn more about homelessness and how to help.

Sleepless San Diego is also the launch event for San Diego CityFest with Luis Palau, a five-month Season of Service and two-day celebratory festival on September 11-12 at Mission Bay Park.  The CityFest Season of Service will center around five “high-impact” events in the areas of homelessness, hunger, mentoring, military, and schools.  At its conclusion in September, the CityFest Season of Service will be the largest ever single volunteer movement in San Diego County. It has received official endorsement from the County Board of Supervisors and various city mayors, including verbal support from San Diego City Mayor Jerry Sanders.  The festival itself is free and open to the public, projected to bring out at least 100,000 San Diegans.

Sleepless San Diego will be held at Liberty Station, 2772 Historic Decatur Rd., San Diego, CA 92106. Participants can register online, or on the day of the event, April 24, from 3-9 p.m.  The expo is from 3-9 p.m. and is FREE.

Northminster Pres Moves into Action!

April 17th, 2010 by admin

The Season of Service officially kicks off April 24th, but Northminster Pres is getting a head start!

Northminster Presbyterian Church’s first Season of Service Outreach Project was at Clairemont’s Hawthorne Elementary School on April 17, 2010.

The group of about 50 took on two projects during the day, and left the school with some great new spaces for there youngsters.  The first project was to fix the kindergarten vegetable and flower garden, which was in terrible need of a green thumb.  By the time the group was finished, not only did they clean and replant, they also installed a brand new irragation system and spread much needed mulch in an area which was  also in need of a bit of garden expertise.

The second of the two projects brought smiles to everyone’s faces.  The group mounted tiled plaques on the school library external wall, leaving the school with a fun new addition that was uniquely it’s own.  The tiles were painted by children, teachers, and parents from the school, and fired by volunteer Patricia Kaszas.  Principle Kimberly Lopez was more than pleased.

With just 50 volunteers, Northminster Pres was able to share the love that it talks about every Sunday.  And that’s the goal of the Season of Service – to truly love San Diego!

If you’d like to serve with Northminster Presbyterian Church, they’re next Outreach Project will be on June 13, 2010. It will be a cleanup, fixing potholes, and repairing fences in a Clairemont alleyway.  Northminster Presbyterian is located at 4324 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, San Diego, CA 92117 and they can be reached by calling 858-490-3995.
